I'm want to do some music edits and want to know what is the program of choice of people here for doing basic sound editing?

There are a few out there. One of the most popular is Cool Edit which has been purchased by Adobe and is now called Adobe Audition ver. 1. Basically the same setup, just a few minor tweaks and a name change.
